OPA Feed-in Tariff Program

  • FIT was enabled by the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009
  • The OPA (Ontario Power Authority is in charge of implementing the project
  • North America's first guaranteed pricing structure for renewable electricity production
  • For projects that can generate more then more than 10 kilowatts of electricity
  • Prices are designed to cover project costs and provide a sensible rate of return on investments over the term of the contract.
  • There are many tools that can be used to determine the amount of electricity your renewable energy project can produce:

To Participate:

To participate you must be willing to cover the initial investment and bear any operating and maintenance costs.

  • Have your project connected to your local distribution system
    • You should investigate options for connecting your project to the grid. It is also necessary to determine whether connection capacity is available before you submit an application.
  • Enter a 20-year contract

Eligibility guidelines:

  • Project must be located in Ontario and fueled by a renewable energy source
  • For data collection, must be separately metered
  • Projects must have a certain amount of Canadian content (Amount of goods and services that come from Canada). These numbers will increase over time and is determined by the projects milestone date for commercial applications
    • Wind projects over 10 KW
      • 25% before January 1, 2012
      • 50 Percent on of after January 1, 2012
    • Solar PV projects over 10 KW and less than or equal to 10,000 KW
      • 50% before January 1, 2011
      • 60% on or after January 1, 2011
